Our everyday mission of transformation

The Nordic Network for Electric Aviation (NEA) is the platform where Nordic actors come together to accelerate the introduction of electric aviation in the Nordic countries. The project is a collaboration between partners from six Nordic countries.  

Our Nordic countries have in many ways been frontrunners when it comes to electric aviation, however before NEA it was “stand-alone” efforts. Our thought with NEA is that a combined effect of these individual efforts could put the Nordic countries in a position to lead the transition to electric regional air travel worldwide. This development presents an important opportunity for Nordic infrastructure and industry. We are one-by-one small countries, and in order to have a truly global impact, we need NEA where we can collaborate. When we work together, the Nordic countries represent the world’s eleventh largest economy and that gives us more muscles

The borderless Nordic region of tomorrow

The Nordic countries all have high ambitions to become more environmentally sustainable. January 2019, the Nordic Prime ministers signed the “Declaration on Nordic Carbon Neutrality”, committing their countries to strengthen cooperation to attain carbon neutrality domestically. The declaration emphasizes decarbonization of the transport sector. We see ourselves as part of that work.

The Nordics the perfect place to start with electric aviation

Norway aims for all short-haul flights to be 100% electric by 2040, and Sweden aims for all domestic air travel to be fossil-fuel free by 2030, and all international flights departing from Swedish airports by 2045.  Finavia in Finland, Avinor in Norway and Gothenburg Aeroclub (Sweden) all have introduced the first electric aircraft in their respective countries, and Elfly AS has ordered 18 electric trainer aircraft and led the acquisition of another 60 aircraft for flight schools in Sweden and Norway.

There is also a burgeoning electric aerospace industry in the Nordic countries, evidenced by Electric Aircraft startup Heart Aerospace AB, Northvolt, in Sweden, and the work of Rolls-Royce in Norway, to give some examples. 

We also have the common belief that most of our electricity is renewable, in Iceland and Norway it is even 100% renewable.
